An ancient mode of prayer
In The Isaiah Effect, author Gregg Braden explores the lost art of prayer that is much different from how most understand prayer today.
Normally, you pray for what you want — what you don’t have.
But in the ancient form of prayer, you pray by imagining that you already have what you want. You imagine it with such force and clarity that you actually feel the feelings of gratitude that you would, had you been granted what you want.
Much in the fashion of using the Law of Attraction, but without the major pitfalls.
So instead of focusing on the lack of what you want, you focus on thanks for receiving it.
Mindful prayer
This is mindful prayer because instead of letting your heart and mind wander “over there” to your desired and imagined future, your heart and mind stay in the present; you imagine your future is already here, just as you want it.
Mindful prayer keeps you modest
And this means that your heart and mind become more aware of the natural consequences of being granted your wish, because you act “as if” your life has already changed, and “live with” the changes — during your moments of prayer.
So you can see if getting that new car is what you really want — or if it’s just reliable, comfortable transportation.
Sometimes when you get what you wish for, you find that you actually don’t want all the responsibilities attached to it — mindful prayer helps you get a better picture of the whole package before you commit to the responsibilities.
Mindful prayer focuses you on your goals
Mindful prayer helps you figure out what you really want and why. It also helps to see that you don’t want to control other people to make your wishes come true — that it’s more honest to respect their best interests and focus on dreams that are unique to you.
You may think you want a new job, when you really want more time to do what you love. You may think you need to find your Soul Mate, when you really want to be happier with yourself. You may think you want more money, when you really want more freedom.
Mindful prayer keeps you focused on your goals
When you pray by focusing on what you don’t have, you end up idolizing what you think you want. Fantasies may seem perfect, but real life has nothing to do with perfection.
Mindful prayer, however, brings your true goals into your conscious multi-sensory awareness. It shifts your focus from wants to goals. Which means it helps you take more response ability for realizing those goals.
Because when you can see and feel how strongly you want to achieve something, and why — you will do everything you can to make it happen.

I nearly cried when I finished reading your post. It really hit home. Things have been very stressful lately. I’m aware that I sometimes idolize what I think I want, so this was a great reminder to be thankful for what I do have and focus on goals not wants. I love the idea of the Mindful Prayer.
Thanks Melissa!
Aw, Kelley, don’t get me started! :p
This morning I spent some time with mindful prayer, and then it naturally led to spending time just reflecting on all that I already have to be grateful for, really to the point of tears. It’s incredibly powerful stuff that keeps you motivated and focused. I’ll need to write a follow-up, as mindful prayer and gratitude reflection really go hand-in-hand.
Thanks for sharing Kelley!
