Radio producer Scott Carrier quit his job at a low moment in his life. His wife left him and took the kids. And he got a job interviewing schizophrenics for some medical researchers. After doing it a while, he began to wonder if he was a schizophrenic himself.
Scott’s story will haunt you. It will sadden you. It made me cry really hard. But it’s worth it.
Because it will make you wonder what sanity really is, and if we’re all crossing the line, stepping over into mental illness, more often than we’d like to admit.
Scott’s story will make you to think about your own life, and how little control you really do have.
All that you can hold onto is your attitude.
You have to keep it healthy and strong, to endure… so that if the job, the family, or the sanity evaporate — you still stand.
A creature of man in nature. Alive. Taking it one step at a time.
Creating meaning out of life. And finding beauty from despair.
To hear Scott’s story, tune into “Act One. The Test.” of This American Life’s episode #37: The Job That Takes Over Your Life. Host Ira Glass overviews each act at at 2:11, and then it goes right into “Act One.”
